Who He Is
Dr. Mehran Kouchek is a professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, where he holds a clinical appointment at Imam Hossein Hospital in Tehran, Iran.
His career spans more than three decades of clinical practice, academic teaching, and medical research, with formative training across leading institutions in France — including René Descartes University, Krémlin-Bicêtre Hospital, Pitié–Salpêtrière, and Paul Brousse Hospital — and the Cleveland Clinic in the United States.
Research
Clinical & Research Focus
Dr. Kouchek's research centres on improving outcomes for critically ill and perioperative patients through rigorous clinical trials and outcomes research. His work spans intensive care medicine, pain management, pharmacologic interventions, and emergency and trauma care.
He is a Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP) awarded by the World Institute of Pain, and has served as FIPP Examiner and member of the WIP Educational Committee since 2017. From 2015 to 2017 he served as President of the WIP Iran Section.

Alongside his clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Kouchek is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. Classical Guitarist
Beyond his medical career, Dr. Kouchek has devoted 51 years to the classical guitar — a discipline he approaches with the same rigour and passion he brings to medicine.
Rooted firmly in the classical tradition, he also explores fingerstyle and flamenco techniques, though he identifies first and foremost as a classical guitarist. His musical education encompasses formal music theory, solfège and rhythm theory, grounding his playing in a deep structural understanding of music.
Music, for Dr. Kouchek, is not a hobby but a lifelong calling — a reminder that behind every great clinician there is also a whole person.
